WHAT IS IT ALL ABOUT?

Roan on Fire is composed differently from most of my work.  Instead of centering a single story, it is fueled from the intersection of three ideas that inspire me: the Year of the Fire Horse, the unapologetic energy carried by artists like Chapel Roan, and the spark that becomes a catalyst for collective change like Katniss Everden in the Hunger Games.  Each material was chosen to carry their presence within the scent story.

Chappell Roan’s bold presence inspired the use of fenugreek CO₂, red maple, and benzoin. Fenugreek is known for its maple-like sweetness (something Chappell herself has spoken about) while benzoin references resins burned in church chapels.

Katniss Everdeen’s world shaped another layer of the composition. Cypress, an evergreen, mirrors the Everdeen name, while birch tar introduces smoke and tension. Cherry bark and hay represent the roan horse itself while rum, osmanthus, hawthorn berry, pomelo blossom, and agarwood brings in warmth and celebratory energy associated with Lunar New Year.

The Fire Horse in the lunar zodiac can be associated with momentum, disruption, and stepping forwards. Roan on Fire explores how different flames can meet and burn brighter together.
