Low Carb Cat: Best Avant-Garde at Pineapple Fragrance Festival
In a space often defined by tradition, some fragrances exist to challenge it.
d.grayi’s Low Carb Cat was awarded Best Avant-Garde Fragrance at the Pineapple Fragrance Festival, recognizing its unconventional approach to scent and storytelling.
What “Avant-Garde” Means in Fragrance
Avant-garde perfumery doesn’t follow expectations.
It explores:
- unexpected combinations
- unconventional inspiration
- ideas that may feel unfamiliar at first
Rather than aiming for mass appeal, it asks:
What can fragrance express beyond what is considered “wearable”?
Winning in this category reflects a willingness to take risks and to create outside of established norms.
The Idea Behind Low Carb Cat
Low Carb Cat is a vanilla fragrance inspired by springtime in Tokyo—where sweetness, freshness, and atmosphere overlap in unexpected ways.
The name “Low Carb” comes from its construction.
Instead of using traditional natural materials, the composition leans on synthetic vanilla and civet, creating an interpretation rather than a literal recreation.
It became an experiment:
how much vanilla can be pushed into a composition—while still feeling balanced and alive?
This was the first gourmand I created, but it wasn’t meant to be heavy.
It was meant to breathe.
A Fresh Take on Gourmand
The opening doesn’t only read as sweet.
Instead, it’s green fresh:
- catnip
- shiso
- wasabi root tincture
These green, herbaceous notes cut through the vanilla, giving the scent a brightness that keeps it from becoming overly dense.
As it develops, the sweetness begins to surface, but it’s layered into something more atmospheric.
Spring in Tokyo
In the background, there’s a subtle industrial edge an echo of standing in line outside a bakery in Tokyo.
Warm air.
Faint metallic notes.
The quiet hum of the city.
Through it, softer details emerge:
- hints of cherry blossom
- touches of ume
- the aroma of freshly baked goods drifting outward
It’s not just a gourmand it’s a place, a moment, and a contrast.
Final Thoughts
Low Carb Cat plays with contradiction:
- synthetic vs natural
- sweet vs green
- comfort vs environment
What begins as a vanilla fragrance becomes something more layered,
a memory shaped as much by atmosphere as by scent.
